Chandigarh

Le Corbusier was commissioned to build Chandigarh, the new capital of Punjab to celebrate India's independence from the British. Completed in 1960 it is a city for 10 million people and with a brutalist mix of form and function that has many Le Corbusier signatures. He was responsible for almost every detail of the layout of the city including its public institutions, libraries, courts and universities, as well as the smaller details like bus stops, street lamps and paving stones.
